The northern based Ekwendeni Hammers has secured a third slot in the elite Tnm super League following their 1-0 victory over struggling Mighty Tigers at Mzuzu stadium on sunday.

Chawanangwa Gumbo- the hero of the day-slotted in the much needed goal in the 19th minute of the first half propelling Ekwendeni’s victory which conversely spelled doom for the Mighty Tigers who are still wallowing in the relegation zone.

Excited with the victory, Coach for Ekwendeni Hammers Kadenge Mwafuliwa, was on cloud nine. He, however, lamented at his boys for taking a casual approach of not playing their usual game.

“My boys were over confident as if they already new that they are going to win the game, but all in all, three points is good for us.”said Kadenge.

His counterpart, on the other hand, coach Trevor Kajawa for Tigers, was furious that his team didn’t play according to instructions and that luck was not on their side.

“We made several changes which changed the tempo of the game,” lamented the Tiger’s coach.

A win for Ekwendeni Hammers puts them on third position with 33 points from 20 games played, pushing wanderers to the fifth position with 31 points from 19 games played so far.

Elsewhere in the league, Chitipa United shared a point each in a barren draw at Karonga stadium making Karonga United climb to the fourth position with 32 points from 20 games while Chitipa remains on position 13 with 19 points.

The tussle for the points in the elite league continued on Monday (the 14 the of June) at Mzuzu Stadium where we witnessed the Mighty Tigers defeating the host (Moyale Barracks) 2-1. Chilembwe was the hero of the day as he scored twice for the Tigers; and the host relied on the experienced legs of Mkutu for their consolation goal. On Wednesday, Nyasa Big Bullets have got chances to go top of the summit table if they manage to beat Ntopwa at the Kamuzu stadium. Their arch-rival (the Nomads) have a huge task to claim their third position back if they beat Red Lions at Chiwembe stadium.

The two Blantyre giants Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers were exempted from playing over the weekend as they contributed more players to the Flames who played against Tanzania in a game which Malawi lost 2-0 to the host in Dareslaam with goals coming in from John Bosco and Israel Patrick Mwenda on 67 and 75 minute respectively, in the second half.
